In my opinion during the initial stages of courtship, is when people should put all their cards on the table, why, to set the record straight about your intent, your expectations and your likes and dislikes. If you are compatible you will find your date smoothly flowing but if you are not you will benefit from knowing that he was not the one for you despite his physical appearance which is usually the primary attraction. Bite the bullet and let your hair down and go with the flow, have fun my dear.

She needs to leave this man but she won’t listen to me.

I believe it is your natural instinct to want to protect your sister from her alleged bad husband. However I must point out that you are under their roof and from what you have implied you are not financially able to give your sister a better live so to speak. From what you have narrated he sounds guilty however, whether the husband mistreats her or not it is not your place to confront him. Once you alerted your sister about your suspicions it was then upon her to evaluate your findings and decide on her own path. Many relatives that attempt to help find their efforts are usually in vain. Emotions have a way of distorting or clouding simple logic and rationality in humans so the best you can do is table your concern and let your sister make her own choice. I wouldn’t be surprise that your sister knows of her husband’s short comings but chooses to ignore them and live one day at a time despite her alleged mistreatment.

Dear Maurice,
I have been married for 14 years and blessed with three girls. My husband, for as long as I can remember has consumed much of his time with his work as he travels often. His secondary priority goes to his friends.

Years of abuse

I have been in marriage for 17 years and for the same period I have been in an abusive marriage. About 3 years ago my husband was fired because of drunkenness. Considering you have noted that your husband is jobless I can not speculate on his capacity to provide for his family now or in the future but it is crucial that whatever decision you make that it benefits your children. Regarding your husband’s drinking, it sounds like he may be a candidate for rehab. Then again are you willing to assist him being the father of your children. You could assist him either through his real friends or through his extended family. Not always an easy choice to help those who have wronged you but it would be a noble action for you to take. Remember your kids are watching and later in life they will know that despite all you attempted to help their father.

Cheated with an older man

I have been married for 6 years. I am Kenyan and my wife is Dutch. I have been that faithful man that women wish for but now I am struggling with my current mental state. I am stressed.

Mama’s boy

Dear Maurice,
I met this guy back in 2008 and we fell in love. After 2 years of courtship, we opted for a traditional marriage. He met my parents and paid a down payment as part of the dowry and mamasboysloveafter blessings from both parents, we started living together as husband and wife.
In that duration, this guy was perfect in everything only that he was a “mamas boy”, I mean, he would report anything to his mother from what we ate for breakfast, lunch and supper, he also shared what we discussed and what we were planning to do. He continued like that despite my warnings that he was a grown man and should not behave like a child.
Am a christian and I frequently requested him to formalize our marriage by a church wedding but he would tell me that he was waiting for his mother to decide for him. He finally agreed in 2011 but his mother did not approve of it and she was heard by my friend saying she would do anything within her reach to disrupt the wedding since I will own everything from her son and that her son will no longer ‘worship’ her.mamasboy
The whole family did not help in the wedding contribution and preparation. I had to do everything so as to make the day a success. This guy also folded his hands and I had foot all the bills including paying for his wedding suit. It reached a point where when I greeted my mother-in-law, she would not respond, and she will started calling me names. She even went ahead and brought a young lady with a baby and told me in my face that she was her son’s wife and that I was not going to wed him because she will personally disrupt the wedding.
I believe in the power of prayer, and that is what kept me going and because we did wed in 2012. During the wedding day, it happened that the car which was to bring the lady (preferred daughter-in-law) broke down and by the time she reached the church, we had already been pronounced husband and wife. After the wedding, this guy changed completely and most of the time would put up at his mothers place.
One day, his mother came to our home and told her son that “enough is enough, am fed up with this thing you call a wife and her insults. In fact, since your wedding day she does not respect me anymore and so I do not want to see her again”. The next day this guy packed his things and went back to his mama, leaving me out in the cold. He also told me that he won’t risk his mother’s curse in the name of staying married to me.
I picked up my pieces and moved on with my life. God saw my sorrows and blessed me with a well paying job. When they heard that am now a working, he and his mother started calling me and asking for forgiveness and saying that was the work of the devil, and that I still belong to that family. How evil and two faced can you get, to abandon me and want me back when you hear my life is going well. My question is, how do I pay them back? What criteria should I use to make them feel the same humiliation they put me through?
I came to learn later that the lady they claimed to be ‘the official wife’ left that family after what she was promised was never fulfilled to her.
Please advise me since I do not have anything to do with this idiot and my love for him is since diverted to another lucky man whom am expecting his child at the moment. God has been good to me since now I driver myself and I am enjoying my life. My family has been so supportive and so is my new found love. Waiting for your reply.

I am a firm believer of the courtship foundation. Like a block of flats, a relationship requires the initial foundation to be solid with mutual expectations. Especially if the courtship leads to marriage. It is clear that your ex is reliant on his mother to make his decisions for him which is never a good sign. Sadly it is natural for many people to side with their parent despite the emotional damage it does to their spouse. Once you have a marital bond you expect your partner to support you ‘no matter what’, I believe the vow is through thick and thin. Once you got into the formalities of a traditional marriage your husband should have stayed committed to you and not to his mother. It is even more evident that your husband was not committed to you if you had to cover for the costs of your church wedding. Though I must admit I am surprised that with all the negative energy and lack of support from your husband that you still went on with your wedding.

 

At this point and considering you are a Christian, there is no need for pay back. You have already humiliated them with your ability to pick up the pieces and move on. The fact that they want you back is enough humiliation and clearly their need for you comes with a salary tag price.Your ex has not changed his colours, he is still in coalition with his mother and that is unlikely to change. I recommend that you stay clear of their joint efforts to lure you back. Some people may advise you to go back because you are his wife and that you should weather the storm. From experience with dealing with such cases this is one storm you do not want to weather.
Embrace your new found love and cherish the fact that in months to come you will be a mother to your child. It is however critical that you seek legal advice on your marriage so that you can officially part ways with your husband.

She wants stability

Dear Maurice,

After dating for a year then breaking up for another year , she moved in with me on mid last year and we were committed to each other. I then found her a job through my network and she surprised me by furnishing our home with new deco. In December she traveled to visit her family upcountry. The main question is, are you prepared to be there for her, to support her choices, support her through college and prove to her that you will stand by her side always.
The fact that you are asking whether to stay or leave tells me that you still have feelings for her otherwise you would have moved on. Despite her current disconnection from you, before you make any major decision about your relationship I recommend that you find her and rationally hear her side of the story. Once you hear her out you can both mutually decide the way forward.
